Data Controller

Smartermeter.ie is the data controller for personal data processed through this site. The supervisory authority for data protection in Ireland is the Data Protection Commission.

What We Collect

Account data — your email address and a securely hashed password.
ESB connection credentials — only if you use the optional feature to connect your ESB Networks account directly. Stored encrypted and entirely voluntary.
Electricity usage data — the usage files you upload, used solely to calculate your comparison results.
Profile settings — location type, solar panels, and export estimate. Used to improve comparison accuracy.
Switch request data — name, MPRN, phone, address, and Eircode. Collected only if you choose to request a switch, and shared exclusively with the supplier you select.

Legal Bases

We process your account data, usage files, and profile settings because they are necessary to provide the comparison service (GDPR Article 6(1)(b) — contractual necessity). Switch request data is processed only on the basis of your explicit consent at the point of submission, which you may withdraw at any time before the switch is actioned.

Retention

Account & usage data: kept for the lifetime of your account and deleted within 30 days of an account deletion request.
ESB connection credentials: deleted immediately on request, or when your account is deleted.
Switch request data: kept for 12 months from submission, or until actioned.

Who We Share Data With

Named electricity supplier (switch requests only). If you submit a switch request, your contact details are passed to the supplier you selected — and no other.

We do not share data with advertising networks, analytics platforms, data brokers, or any electricity supplier other than the one you explicitly choose.

Referral fees: Smartermeter.ie may receive a referral fee when a switch completes. This never affects plan rankings — plans are always ordered by estimated annual cost only.

Security

Passwords are securely hashed — we cannot read your actual password. Any ESB credentials you provide are encrypted before storage. All data is transmitted over HTTPS.

Your Rights

Under GDPR you have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict, or export your personal data, and to object to processing or withdraw consent. To exercise any of these rights, email team@smartermeter.ie — we respond within 30 days.

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with the Irish Data Protection Commission.

Cookies

We set no cookies — not session, analytics, or advertising cookies. We use PostHog (EU-hosted) for product analytics to improve the service — no advertising trackers or tracking pixels. PostHog data is stored in localStorage, not cookies. To keep you logged in, we store a login token in your browser's local storage, which is cleared when you log out.
